How to Build a Go Cart Frame

You don’t have to be an expert or even a mechanic to build a go cart frame at home. In fact, you don’t even need any advanced or special tools. All you ever need are the right tools and materials and learn the needed steps on how to build one. The important thing is to follow a guide properly and to take safety precautions. Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and gloves when you do heavy work using your hands.

Needed Tools and Materials

To build a go cart frame, you will need the following things: chalk, tape measure, tube notcher, and a welding tool. Other things you’ll need to have around would include a pipe bender, hammer, chop saw, angle iron, and filter material.

Get the Measurements

To obtain the customized length and width of the frame, sit on a clean floor and visualize yourself inside a go cart. Use your chalk to sketch the needed dimensions of your intended frame according to your body size and shape. Make sure that there is enough comfortable leg room and space for your body to maneuver. Remember that the standard frame width as you build a go cart frame is two-thirds the wheelbase.

Chopping the Metal Parts

Chop the metal to build a go cart frame using a chop saw. Remember to take safety precautions during this part of the process. Always refer to the design that you have laid out to avoid committing costly mistakes. It would be a good idea to get an assistant to help you with the cutting of the various metal parts of your go cart frame. After cutting the parts out you should check if every piece is correctly proportioned. Make any needed adjustments in case you make mistakes.

Connect your frame’s tubes using a welding tool. For parts and areas near where your legs should be positioned, use the tubing notcher. This is also another tough part of the process when you build a go cart frame. Check the feet rest and figure out the wedge accuracy. Use a hammer to flatten out the rounded end once you get to work on it.

Affixing the Roll Bars

As a safety feature, you should add roller bars to your go cart frame around the area for the driver. At this point in our steps to build a go cart frame, you may affix the seats. Make sure they are two inches from off the surface in order to make a gravitational center for your frame.

Using the Angle Iron

You should begin this phase using a chalk outline. You may bend the angle iron to shape by heating it. Use the welding tool when you’ve already got the right shape. Keep assembling everything until you have your frame completed. Use the pipe bender when designing your frame.
